In a country known for having the toughest and harshest anti-LGBTQ+ laws, stories like that of Shawn and Brian might seem improbable. However, their narrative speaks volumes, revealing a reality of encounters and fraternity that reflects the true spirit of Ugandan society.
Shawn, a renowned gospel singer in Uganda, has spent over a decade pursuing his dream of becoming a professional singer. Today, he stands fulfilled and grateful for his career, which has allowed him to “know God at a personal level”.
He believes that “anyone who truly knows God and has felt His presence would not be homophobic or judgmental toward the LGBTQ+ community, especially those who are Christians.”
A few months ago, Shawn conducted a youth worship session that resonated deeply with many young people. Among the thank-you letters he received was one that stood out due to its personal and heartfelt nature. The letter was from Brian, a 15-year-old boy who poured out his heart, seeking prayers and help because of his sexual orientation.
Unconditional Love
“…This something pushes me to get attracted to my fellow boys. I am so tired of it. I am trying to find ways of getting out of me. I told one of my friends to help me get out of this and he mentored me but it only went for a few days and it came back. I also told one of my friends at school but he kept away from me. Don’t also keep away from me, please. I need your help, please!” wrote Brian
Upon reading the letter, Shawn felt an immediate need to meet Brian and reassure him of God’s unconditional love. He wanted Brian to know that God loves him as he is and desires his happiness and fulfillment without worrying about his sexual orientation.
“He is only 15 years old and he is hopeless because he doesn’t know who to talk to without being judged or rejected. As he explained in the letter he has been rejected and neglected by pastors whom he tried to reach out to. I wanted him to see me as his big brother in Christ, to know he is not alone in this.,” said Shawn.
Brian’s cry for help reflects the struggles of many young Ugandans who, after witnessing their lawmakers vote for one of the world’s most anti-LGBTQ+ laws—a move supported by many religious leaders—question their existence and value.
The Future of Churches
“Churches are failing Christians. Most church leaders are selfish and are failing to lead and care for Christians. Most importantly, they are failing to recognize the humanity and the gift of LGBTQ+ Christians,” added Shawn.
Christians like Shawn are rare, but they are the ones providing hope for churches that are built to love, care for, and treasure every person, regardless of who they are. These are the churches where Jesus is truly present, God is alive, and a better world for everyone is being crafted, rooted in peace and kindness.
Shawn’s story is a beacon of hope in a society struggling with acceptance and love. His actions exemplify the true essence of Christianity: to love and support one another unconditionally. Through his example, Shawn is paving the way for a more inclusive and compassionate future for all Ugandans
