Can a genuine Christian be gay or lesbian?
This question was asked by our friend from Mali. It is a question that many ask themselves, loudly or in their heart. It goes in the line of whether a gay person can find a bridge between his or her sexuality and his/her faith. Here is our answer to our friend.
This is a very important question. Yes, we ( I and my friends that I work with) strongly believe that a genuine Christian can be gay or lesbian. Christianity is for everyone regardless of race, sex, or gender. That was the good news Jesus to announce. some readings guide our belief and help us to deepen our faith with confidence and in Joy.
I would like to share with you some of them: As Saint Paul says in Galatians 3:28″ There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus”, in John 3: 16 it is written, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Therefore Christianity is a welcoming religion as it is written in Romans 15:07 “Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.”Homosexuality should not stop anyone to live his faith, instead, it should help you to live it well in the light of your faith. It is true that Christianity is used much time as an excuse to discriminate(especially in Africa where culture has embraced Christianity in many societies) but it is not what Christianity is called for. The joy of a true Christian is to be free at caring and loving others. That joy has to start from oneself.
For that reason, a homosexual, lesbian, bisexual, straight, etc. can definitely be Christian and be a genuine Christian if he/she lives her/his faith in that way. I am aware that not everyone will agree with you as gay and Christian but that cannot stop you from being one or make you a second class Christian. It is not easy because we somehow grew up with this idea of what the churches have labeled Christians to be, however, Christianity is now 2020 years old and it has improved compared to 2020 ago.
As gay and Christian, I can personally tell you that it can not be easy when you live your gay life as Christians. You may receive many critics, comments, and discrimination with the church, that’s why Matthew 5:10″Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” is the verse that gives us courage in our everyday life.
